Channel 4 to cut lunchtime news

Channel 4 has decided to end its midday news bulletin from December as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

The 8pm bulletin on digital channel More4 has also been scrapped, with the broadcaster blaming the "severe economic slowdown" for the cuts.

Resources will be concentrated on the main evening bulletin and an improved online politics news service, it added.

The Guardian newspaper said that up to 20 jobs were at risk at ITN, which provides Channel 4's news programmes.

Financial pressures

ITN staff were informed of the cuts on Wednesday. Presenter Alex Thomson wrote on his Twitter page shortly afterwards: "Sad news. We are slump victims like so many others out there".

In a statement, Channel 4 said it wanted to preserve the "reach and impact" of their news bulletins in a cost-effective way.

"We have tried to minimise the impact of these savings on viewers while preserving the quality and integrity of our widely acclaimed evening programme in the face of severe financial pressures," it added.

News at Noon anchorman Krishnan Guru-Murthy will remain part of the news team, and the channel still intends to provide a short lunchtime summary.
