Bowie entertains the stars
![]() The eyes have it: David Bowie woos the crowds at Glastonbury
A star-studded audience saw David Bowie perform a special, unpublicised concert for the BBC.
Bowie, fresh from his triumph at Glastonbury Festival, played the gig on Tuesday for a select audience at Broadcasting House in London. Among those who turned up to see the legendary artist were Hollywood superstars Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan.
British pop veterans Lulu, Simon Le Bon and Bob Geldof, also attended, along with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels actor Nick Moran. They witnessed a mixture of old classics and newer material, in a set that was enthusiastically applauded. Ashes To Ashes, Fame, All The Young Dudes and Wild Is The Wind were interspersed with tracks from Hours - Bowie's latest album, with every song a winner. Duran Duran singer Le Bon told BBC News Online: "The show was fantastic. David Bowie looked great.
"The band was tight and the audience was really up for it. Despite the obvious problems with David's throat, he was able to deliver a moving performance. "The only irritant was the BBC staff who wouldn't stop talking during the songs." Glastonbury Bowie, 53, rolled back the years on Sunday night as he brought down the curtain on the first Glastonbury of the 21st century. He defied a bout of laryngitis to complete a magnificent two-hour set and was clearly enjoying himself throughout. It was the first time Bowie had played Glastonbury since 1971, when by his own admission, "no-one knew any of my songs".
There was no such problem this time around, with just about everybody in a record-breaking crowd of more than 100,000 people singing along at one stage. Bowie is enjoying a bit of a renaissance at the moment and anyone who thought he may have lost it has been proved wrong by two stunning gigs in the space of three days. The BBC show will be broadcast on both television and radio in September.
