Actor Jackie Earle Haley has signed up to play iconic killer Freddy Krueger in a remake of the 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street film series, reports have said.

Industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter said the Watchmen actor has landed the starring role, which was originally played by Robert Englund.

Krueger's razor glove and red-and-green top are instantly recognisable images as well as popular Halloween costumes.

Prison Break star Robert Knepper had been rumoured to take the role.

Samuel Bayer, best known for making music videos for artists such as Blink 182, will direct the remake.

"Looking at his performance in Watchmen, here's a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him," said Bayer.

"And in Nightmare he is going to be under prosthetic make-up.

"You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character."

Haley, who first appeared in as a child star in the 1970s in movies like The Bad News Bears, will next be seen in Shutter Island, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
