Judge praises Gibson's progress
Mel Gibson
Gibson was arrested in Malibu last July when caught speeding

Actor Mel Gibson has been praised by a judge for completing alcohol rehabilitation treatment as part of his probation for a drink-driving offence.

At a hearing in Los Angeles Judge Lawrence Mira said the Mad Max actor no longer needed to report his progress to the court and wished him good luck.

The 52-year-old will remain on probation for a further 18 months.

The star sparked outrage when he made anti-Semitic remarks during his arrest for drink-driving in 2006.

"Difficult time'

Gibson repeatedly apologised for making the comments, and later claimed the outburst might have stemmed from resentment over the criticism levelled at his movie The Passion of the Christ.

The actor had a blood-alcohol level one and a half times over the limit when he was arrested on 28 July 2006.

He later asked forgiveness, explaining that he had battled with alcoholism his whole life.

The Academy Award winner paid a $1,400 (£700) fine as part of his punishment and attended several AA meetings a week.

He also completed a 90-day program for drink-driving offenders that included individual and group counselling.

On Wednesday, Gibson was escorted into court by sheriff's deputies via a back entrance, and spoke only to thank the judge.

Judge Mira warned the star: "You're on your own now with the self-help groups, so this is the most difficult time for you.

"Good luck to you as you continue your rehabilitation," he added.
