BBC defends taped Strictly show

The BBC has responded to criticisms that its Sunday edition of Strictly Come Dancing is pre-recorded, stating that it was "never billed as live".

Some 25 viewers complained after seeing contestant Kenny Logan on ITV's live rugby coverage from Paris shortly after he had danced for survival on BBC One.

A BBC spokeswoman said it "never set out to trick people", adding that many other programmes are recorded as live.

The results show is pre-recorded after Saturday evening's live show.

The programme is taped after viewers' votes have been counted and verified. The live vote closes at 2100 BST.

Extended format

One viewer who complained to the BBC said: "I could not believe it when I saw Kenny Logan commentating on the rugby on ITV at the same time."

Logan, who won 70 caps for Scotland during his 13-year international career, is working on ITV's coverage of the Rugby World Cup as well as appearing on Strictly Come Dancing.

Others claimed that it was unclear that the show was pre-recorded and commented that it was "misleading".

The BBC spokeswoman added that other programmes are recorded in advance, including Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, which is recorded on Thursdays.

She said that it is common practice that references to the day that a show is transmitted are made.

The new series of Strictly Come Dancing, which began on Saturday, has introduced a separate results show on a Sunday, revealing which celebrity contestant must leave the programme.

The change was made to meet "a strong appetite for good, entertaining family viewing on Sunday evenings".

Its extended format now includes more dancing, behind-the-scenes footage and musical performances.

Former rugby international Logan, whose sports presenter wife Gabby is also taking part, survived after winning the judges' backing in a dance-off against actor Brian Capron.

The four celebrity judges now have the final say in which of the bottom pair of dancers is saved.
