Robot blockbuster Transformers fell to fourth place on its third week of release, while animated comedy Ratatouille was down to number five.

There were no other new entries in the remaining top 10.

Despite it early success, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry was disliked by many critics.

But Universal - the studio behind the number one film - was pleased with its takings.

"The beauty of Adam Sandler is his fan base adores him, and he delivers on comedy," head of distribution Nikki Rocco told the Associated Press.

"Adam is a star," she said, adding: "We know we're on the way with another $100m movie."
