Moyles sees radio audience soar

DJ Chris Moyles has attracted a record audience to his BBC Radio 1 show, according to new listening figures.

The breakfast host's weekly audience broke the seven million barrier for the first time in the first three months of 2007, the Rajar research showed.

BBC Radio reached a total of 33.46 million people every week - up almost a million on the same time last year.

Other figures show Classic FM has seen a surge in the number of under-15s listening to the station.

The Sony Award-winning station has secured 6.03 million listeners - the highest since 2005.

Rajar's main figures only count listeners aged 15 or over - but Classic FM said it also had an extra 474,000 children tuning in.

Classic FM's managing director Darren Henley said: "These figures prove that today's iPod generation is increasingly turned on by classical music.

"Mozart and Beethoven remain as relevant today as they were in their own lifetimes."

The BBC said its reach had been buoyed by record performances from a number of its digital-only stations.

BBC 6 Music, 1Xtra, BBC 7 and Five Live Sports Extra all posted record figures, adding around three million listeners a week to the BBC's overall audience.

Jenny Abramsky, director BBC Audio & Music said: "The radio industry is in excellent health, as demonstrated by the strong performance of both BBC and commercial radio.

"It is particularly pleasing to see the continued growth of listening via DAB and digital platforms and the record audiences for a number of our digital stations."

Radio 1's reach is up to 10.55 million listeners a week between the start of January and the end of March, up from 9.73 million in the same period last year.

The Chris Moyles Show has 7.06m for the first time - adding 744,000 listeners since this time last year.

The BBC said initiatives like Moyles' Comic Relief Rallyoke challenge - where he toured the UK to host karaoke nights - helped boost listener numbers.

The self-styled "saviour of Radio 1" is now about 800,000 listeners behind Sir Terry Wogan.

Sir Terry's Radio 2 breakfast show shed 100,000 listeners in the last quarter, but the veteran broadcaster still has 100,000 more fans than he did at the same time in 2006.

Commercial radio has seen a 2.5% increase in reach compared with last year, with 31.2 million adults tuning in every week.

With 919,000 listeners, Johnny Vaughan has reclaimed his crown as London's top commercial breakfast show host.

Heart's Jamie Theakston, who has 825,000 listeners, claimed the title when the last set of figures was released in February.

Other new figures show that homes with a digital radio increased 3.5% to 19.5%.

And more people are also using TV, the internet and mobile phones to listen to digital radio stations.
