Keith Urban is a leading nominee at the Country Music Awards
Singer Keith Urban is to miss next month's Country Music Association (CMA) Awards after entering a rehabilitation clinic because of alcohol dependency.

The 38-year-old is up for four prizes at the 40th annual CMA Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, on 6 November.

Urban's wife, actress Nicole Kidman, was said to be with him when he voluntarily entered the US clinic.

The Grammy-winner, formerly a cocaine addict, said he "deeply regrets the hurt this has caused Nicole".

"One can never let one's guard down on recovery, but I'm afraid that I have," he said in a statement.

Urban has CMA nominations for entertainer of the year and best vocalist, both of which he won in 2005, best single for Better Life, and song of the year for co-writing Tonight I Wanna Cry.

The Australia-born star releases a new album, Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing, on 7 November, but has postponed all promotional appearances.

He won a Grammy award earlier this year for best male country vocalist for You'll Think of Me, and was named best male singer by the Academy of Country Music for the second year running.

He and Oscar-winner Kidman live in Nashville, having married in Sydney, Australia, in June.
