The BBC One adaptation of Dickens' Bleak House heads the shows shortlisted for the 2006 Bafta craft awards with eight nominations.

The series' nominations include the costume design, director and make up and hair design categories.

Andrew Davies, who adapted the series, is up for the writer award, with Extras' Ricky Gervais and Doctor Who's Russell T Davies also nominated.

The awards take place on 19 May at The Dorchester hotel in London.

Peter Kosminsky, who penned The Government Inspector, the Channel 4 drama about the death of Dr David Kelly, is the other nominee in the writer category.

Gervais is up for the newly-created award for Extras, the BBC Two follow-up to The Office, with his writing partner Stephen Merchant.

To the Ends of the Earth, BBC Two's 19th Century sea-faring trilogy, has five nominations, while Doctor Who and Channel 4's Elizabeth I, starring Helen Mirren, each have four.

Adaptation praised

Both BBC drama Casanova, featuring Doctor Who star David Tennant, and historical epic Rome - a co-production between the BBC and US network HBO - have three nods.

Nominees for the director award include Bleak House's Justin Chadwick, Joe Ahearne from Doctor Who, Brian Percival of the BBC's Much Ado About Nothing and Simon Cellan Jones, who directed Channel 4's The Queen's Sister.

Bleak House heads the nominees for the main 2006 Bafta TV awards with four nominations in major categories.

It won three Broadcasting Press Guild awards last month.
