Pioneering composer to play in UK
Karlheinz Stockhausen

German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen is to perform in England this autumn for the first time since 2001.

The electronic music pioneer will stage a solo concert at Old Billingsgate Market in London on 22 October.

The concert will feature Kontakte, a work first performed in the 1960s, and Oktophonie, which forms part of his epic 29-hour opera cycle Licht.

The avant-garde musician, 76, will also deliver a lecture on 21 October at the Frieze Art Fair in Regent's Park.

'Vertical movement'

Oktophonie comes from the Tuesday section of Licht, which is divided into seven parts denoting different days of the week.

The composer said the piece featured "vertical movement between four groups of speakers at ceiling level and four at ground level".

Stockhausen began composing the work - one of the most ambitious of its kind - in 1977 and finished it in 2002.

The entire cycle will be staged at the European Centre for the Arts Hellerau in Dresden in 2008 to mark his 80th birthday.

"If you're open to the experience his work is not at all inaccessible," said Matthew Slotover, co-director of the Frieze Art Fair.

"The same sort of people who are attracted to contemporary art will be attracted to a Stockhausen concert."
