Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx has defended his Collateral co-star Tom Cruise following a spate of bad press.

"Tom Cruise is like the Michael Jordan of acting," said Foxx. "He looks like he has everything - and he does.

"He has never had a fall. So people are looking for him to trip and fall."

"If someone had squirted water in my face, I would have whooped their ass," he added, referring to a TV stunt which saw an angry Cruise drenched in water.

Best actor

Cruise, 42, was squirted in the face at the War of the Worlds premiere in London in June.

Foxx also offered an explanation for why Cruise got engaged to actress Katie Holmes soon after splitting with Spanish film star Penelope Cruz.

He said Cruise told him he did "not like not being in a relationship".

Foxx, who picked up a best actor Oscar earlier this year for Ray, starred alongside Cruise in the 2004 thriller Collateral.

He is currently filming Miami Vice with Irish actor Colin Farrell.
