The open air show, which will be broadcast live as part of BBC One's New Year's Eve schedule, brings together top acts from the worlds of pop and classical music. Lennox and Stewart will be the night's main attraction - the duo have only recently begun to perform together as the Eurythmics after a 10-year break.
"This is going to be a truly historic event and Greenwich is the ultimate venue," said Simply Red star Mick Hucknall. The London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus have also been signed up for the 31 December event. The Meridian Line, recognised since 1884 as point from which international time is measured, will also host a fireworks display welcoming the new millennium at the stroke of midnight. New Year revellers will also be treated to funfair rides and performances by street performers at the millennium party.
Canadian megastar Celine Dion recently announced that she intended to team up with compatriot Bryan Adams for a Millennium Eve show in Montreal. Sir Cliff Richard is also reportedly close to selling out a 31 December show in Birmingham. In Wales, the Manic Street Preachers are due to announce the line-up for their millennium show in Cardiff on Tuesday. However, organisers of the Millennium Party in Greenwich may be worried by the cancellation of a similar concert planned for Manchester. Pop group M People pulled the plug on their Millennium Eve show after complaints from fans. The public were said to be concerned the evening would be marred by a lack of transport, babysitting problems and the higher cost of millennium tickets. The band have moved the performance forward to 27 December. ![]() |
