British actress Kristin Scott Thomas has been presented with the Legion of Honour, France's highest cultural award, at a ceremony in Paris.

The Four Weddings and a Funeral star received her award from the French president Jacques Chirac, who paid tribute to her "sensitivity and charm".

The 45-year-old received an OBE in 2003 for services to UK-French relations.

Although born in Cornwall and educated in London, she has spent much of her adult life working and living in Paris.

She enrolled in a French drama school while in her teens and worked in French and other European productions during the early part of her career.

Her first major international role was in Prince's musical drama Under the Cherry Moon in 1986, followed by period drama A Handful of Dust in 1988.

Oscar-nominated for her role in The English Patient, her other films include Gosford Park, The Horse Whisperer and Chromophobia, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

She has also performed on the London stage in Three Sisters and will be back there later this year in the rarely performed tragedy As You Desire Me by Italian dramatist Luigi Pirandello.

Scott Thomas lives in France with her obstetrician husband François Olivennes and their three children - Hannah, Joseph and George.

Other recent recipients of the Legion of Honour include the film directors Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
