American Idol judge Simon Cowell looked on as the US show's host Ryan Seacrest was honoured with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame on Wednesday.

When asked to comment, however, he did not waste the opportunity to mock the 30-year-old disc jockey's achievement.

"Other people doing well just naturally makes me unhappy," he joked, adding: "It's one of those things you dread."

Asked by fellow judge Randy Jackson how he felt about Seacrest's honour, Cowell said it was "ill-deserved".

"I cannot believe April 20 is going to be Ryan Seacrest Day," he continued. "I am officially taking this day off my diary."

But Cowell did add that the pair were actually good friends.

Turnout surprise

Paula Abdul, the third of the show's triumvirate of pundits, was in more generous mood, saying: "He deserves it."

Seacrest, who was honoured for his achievements in radio broadcasting, said he was surprised that anyone had turned out to see the ceremony.

"I thought this would be the most unpopular star dedication ever," he said.

Also at the ceremony was veteran TV host Larry King, who introduced Seacrest to the waiting crowds.
