Singer Christie wins soap cameo

Tony Christie is enjoying renewed chart success after 30 years
Singer Tony Christie's comeback is to continue with a guest appearance in TV soap Emmerdale this summer.

Christie, 61, has just scored his first UK number one single with (Is This the Way To) Amarillo - 34 years after the song was first released.

He will play himself in the Emmerdale episode, in which he will duet with Diane, played by Elizabeth Estensen.

"My mum is more impressed that I will be on Emmerdale than she is with my number one single," Christie said.

He said he had always been a fan of the ITV1 show and was "very excited" about his appearance.

"This is something that I have never done before and I am really looking forward to it."

Christie will meet the characters when they are on a trip to Newcastle. The episode will be filmed in July and broadcast in August.

The veteran star, who was first in the spotlight in the early 1970s, has been championed by Phoenix Nights comedian Peter Kay.

Kay recruited a host of TV legends for the video for Amarillo, which was re-released to raise money for Comic Relief.

'Cause a stir'

An album of greatest hits, his Definitive Collection, is also at number two in the UK album chart.

Christie is following the likes of Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow, cricketer Ian Botham and rugby league player Martin Offiah, who have all appeared in Emmerdale.

An spokeswoman for the show said: "We are delighted that Tony is available to appear in this unique episode which is going to be a lot of fun.

"Tony will be performing one of his songs and will cause a stir by inviting Diane to join him on stage."
