Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are to make their fourth film together with a movie about former US President Theodore Roosevelt, reports say.

DiCaprio has been lined up to star as Roosevelt, president from 1901-09, according to Hollywood paper Variety.

It will be based on Edmund Morris' Pulitzer-winning biography The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, Variety said.

Scorsese and DiCaprio have worked on Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departure, which is due out next year.

DiCaprio was nominated for an Oscar for playing Howard Hughes in The Aviator, while Scorsese was nominated for both The Aviator and Gangs of New York.

Variety said the film would follow Roosevelt's progress from asthmatic lightweight to commander of the First US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, known as The Rough Riders, and on to the White House.

In 2000, Roosevelt was voted the fourth best US president by 60 American history professors.

"His life reads like a movie that requires a big bag of popcorn," screenwriter Nicholas Meyer said.
