A revival of the BBC quiz show Ask The Family, hosted by children's TV duo Dick and Dom, has been axed.

The show was a ratings flop and panned by the critics when it began on BBC Two in April.

The BBC said there was "no plans" to bring back the show, which has been dropped at the end of its planned five-week run.

Robert Robinson presented the original series of Ask The Family, which ran from 1967 to 1982.

Dick and Dom - Richard McCourt and Dominic Wood - present the Saturday morning TV show Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow and had hoped Ask The Family would propel them into the mainstream.

But ratings slipped from 1m for the launch programme, to just 700,000 - only one in 25 of the available audience - towards the end.

Roly Keating, BBC Two controller, admitted in a Radio Times interview that the show did not work.

He said: "Dick and Dom are a brilliant talent and it was a clever idea to try to revive a clever format like that.

"But with the best will in the world, I think everyone involved acknowledges that it wasn't perfectly achieved."

Young audience

A spokeswoman for the BBC said there would not be another series.

"Since the loss of The Simpsons we have been developing a range of options for the 6-7pm slot and are spending time carefully reviewing what works for the audience and what doesn't.

"Dick and Dom's Ask The Family attracted a younger audience than is usual for both the slot and the channel, but we do not have any plans to revive it.

"Dick and Dom are talented presenters and we look forward to working with them on other projects."
