Rapper Snoop Dogg tops US chart

Rapper Snoop Dogg has achieved the first chart-topping single of his career in the US charts.

The performer's song Drop It Like It's Hot crept up to the top spot after spending four weeks at number two.

Dogg displaced My Boo - a duet between R&B stars Usher and Alicia Keys - beating his previous best of number six in 2003 with Beautiful.

The rap star - whose real name is Calvin Broadus - has reached no higher than 12 in the UK singles chart.

His other US chart high was number three in 2003 - but only as a featured artist on Holidae by Chingy.

My Boo had spent six weeks on top of the singles chart.

The Hot 100 singles chart in the US is based on radio airplay and sales.

Legal wrangles

The release date of Dogg's latest album R&G (Rhythm and Gangsta) was brought forward in November in a bid to combat internet piracy.

The 32-year-old Californian rapper made his musical debut in 1992, appearing on Dr Dre's song Deep Cover.

Dogg has faced a number of legal wrangles during his career, including a trial for being the accessory to murder in 1995, for which he was later acquitted.

A man accused Dogg of using an answerphone message on one of his tracks without permission earlier this year, but the case was dismissed.
