Music honour for Beach Boy Wilson
Brian Wilson
Wilson, 62, founded the Beach Boys in 1961
Beach Boys star Brian Wilson has been honoured by the US Recording Academy, the body which awards the Grammys.

Wilson, 62, was given the MusiCares award for his musical achievements and his charity work for cancer research.

A host of performers, to be confirmed in January, will pay tribute to the Beach Boys founder at a gala dinner on 11 February 2005 in Los Angeles.

The ceremony is part of a week-long festival leading up to the 47th Grammy Awards on 13 February.

Songwriter Wilson, his two younger brothers - Dennis and Carl - cousin Mike Love and Al Jardine formed the Beach Boys in 1961.

The group's hits include Surfin' USA and I Get Around

Hits include I Get Around, California Girls and Surfin' USA.

Wilson is the last surviving brother, following the deaths of Dennis, in 1983, and Carl, who died of cancer in 1998.

He recently finished a tour of the US with his acclaimed Smile show, which included songs from the 'lost' album Smile, regarded by many as a masterpiece.

Work began on Smile after the Beach Boys' ground-breaking 1966 album Pet Sounds, but recording sessions disintegrated because of Wilson's psychological problems brought on by drug use.

MusiCares was established by the US Recording Academy in 1989 to provide assistance to musicians in times of financial, medical or personal emergency.
