The Clash win inspiration award
The Clash
The Clash won one of the 15 Mojo awards at the inaugural event
The Clash have been awarded a prize for being "inspiring" by music magazine Mojo's Honours List.

The awards, which also featured The Kinks' Ray Davies, recognise career-long contributions to popular music.

Mojo editor-in-chief Phil Alexander said the band had a "pushy bravado" which created songs "that remain as powerful and relevant today".

Davies, described as "consistently brilliant", won the songwriter prize for writing "classic material".

Davies wrote classic 1960s songs such as Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me and Lola.

Other stars honoured by the awards included James Brown, Marianne Faithfull, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Morrissey, Sting and the Black Eyed Peas.

And Sting won an international prize for influencing "all styles of music" and for his ability to "cross musical and physical boundaries".

"[Sting is] a performer who's used all kinds of musical styles, from jazz and soul through to world music, to create a unique sound that's gone on to influence soul, urban, hip hop and a new generation of rock stars," Mr Alexander said.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were awarded the Mojo Maverick Award their "staying power".

Mr Alexander said: "The Chili Peppers' success is phenomenal.

"Like all great rock acts, their live performance hits home just how long they've been around and the depth and quality of their catalogue of classic songs."
