Star Wars DVDs top web sales list
Star Wars
The original Star Wars film was released in 1977
The DVDs of the original Star Wars trilogy have topped the charts on internet retailer Amazon's UK website - almost six months before their release.

The Star Wars Trilogy is number one on the site's top 100 DVD chart, despite not being available until September.

The 29 set made the number one spot just 24 hours after the site made it available to pre-order.

It has beaten DVDs of recent hits such as The Matrix Revolutions and Love Actually in the Amazon chart.

The original trilogy - Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi - have been eagerly awaited on DVD.

Film favourites

The films have never been available on the format before, despite being some of the most popular movies in cinema history.

Star Wars, from 1977, is regarded as one of Hollywood's landmark films, launching the career of actor Harrison Ford. It regular tops polls of audiences' favourite films of all time.

Star wars creator George Lucas revived the series in 1999 with The Phantom Menace, the first in a prequel trilogy set years before the events in the original Star Wars.

The second film, Attack of the Clones, followed in 2002, with the third film - as yet untitled - due to follow in 2005.
