Bridget Jones author gives birth
Helen Fielding
Fielding's creation was turned into a 2001 film
Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding has given birth to her first child, a baby boy, in Los Angeles.

The British-born writer, 43, gave birth to the 7lb 5oz baby at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"It all went very well and we're overjoyed," said Fielding and her partner, scriptwriter Kevin Curran.

The couple, who met when Fielding was promoting her book in the US, joked that the baby currently had 12 names but they were trying to narrow it down.

Fielding's character Bridget Jones first appeared in a newspaper column but went on to become the star of two best-selling books.

Many women in their thirties felt they could identify with the down-to-earth singleton.

The first novel, Bridget Jones's Diary, was made into a successful film starring Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant.

Sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, which again stars Zellweger, will be released later this year.

Fielding's latest novel, Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination, is about a female spy.
