Hit Broadway show The Producers is to be staged in London's West End with US actor Richard Dreyfuss and comic Lee Evans in the starring roles.

The musical, which comedy legend Mel Brooks adapted from his 1968 film of the same name, was Broadway's hottest ticket in 2001 and 2002.

It will now be staged at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 9 November 2004.

Dreyfuss has starred in films like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Evans is known as a goofy comedian.

Brooks told the London Evening Standard newspaper: "What an act, what a double. These guys look so good together - they were born to play these parts."

Dreyfuss, who won an Oscar in 1978 for The Goodbye Girl, is appearing in comedy Sly Fox on Broadway before taking up his London role.

He said The Producers was "a great musical" that "makes you laugh so much you want to spit your milk up".

But he added: "My voice is terrible. I sound OK in the shower, but then it is hard to hear over the water."

Evans is known as a stand-up comedian and has appeared in films like Mouse Hunt and There's Something About Mary.

"I am delighted. This is the kind of job that doesn't come along very often," he said.

The Broadway version of The Producers won a record 12 Tony Awards in 2001, when it starred Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.
