Pavarotti show cancelled

Luciano Pavarotti won't be making his Twickenham debut

Luciano Pavarotti's summer show at Twickenham rugby ground is to be cancelled after it was refused planning permission by the local council.

The 63-year-old Tenor was to perform to 45,000 people on 19 June, at the first concert to be held at the rugby ground.

"This was a very difficult decision to make," said a spokesman for the council, who pulled the plug on the concert because of traffic congestion and noise levels it would cause.

The show, which was to be the star's only British concert this year, will be cancelled pending an appeal.

Meanwhile, Pavarotti was joined by Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras and an audience of 35,000 in Pretoria on Sunday, at a concert to celebrate five years of democracy in South Africa.

Barbra Streisand is planning a series of millennium weekend shows with ticket prices ranging from $2,500 to $1m, which could earn the superstar $13m.

The LA Times reported those paying the top price will get two front-row seats at the MGM Grand, a room at a mansion, spa treatments and a gourmet meal.

MGM representatives have said no deal has yet been completed and Streisand's manager says the singer would have to approve any such package.

The Streisand shows are likely be the biggest-grossing New Year's event in Las Vegas, where Elton John and Tina Turner, Andrea Bocelli, Bette Midler and Rod Stewart will all be putting on shows.

A producer of the Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love has secured the film rights to the novel Spinners, by New Zealand author Anthony McCarten.

David Parfitt's Dogstar production company will develop the project and McCarten will direct his own script.

Parfitt, who outbid five other major film companies for the rights said: "The film within this novel immediately leapt out at us.

"It is such a vivid piece of work, a story of real imagination and intelligence".

The novel is about a factory worker who claims to have met an alien, sparking a wave of pregnancy scares. It will be published in the UK next week.
