The Indiana Jones action movie series has become the fastest-selling DVD box set in US history, a report has said.

More than 1.1 million of the four-disc set - comprising all three films plus a bonus disc - were sold in the first week, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Played by Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones was an adventurous 1930s archaeologist who battled to find ancient treasures.

Ford, director Steven Spielberg and creator George Lucas are reuniting to film a fourth instalment next year.

The first three films had not been available on DVD before and the box set sold 600,000 copies in the US on its first day alone.

"We couldn't be more pleased about the fantastic sales figures," Jim Ward of movie studio Lucasfilm told the Hollywood Reporter.

"Our top priority was making sure these movies looked and sounded better than ever, so a new generation of fans can discover them for the first time."

The DVDs contain extra material including a full-length documentary about the making of the movies. A documentary crew followed the cast and crew as they shot the films.

The first of the trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released in 1981, with the others following in 1984 and 1989.

The final film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, was the most successful at the box office, taking almost $500m (300m) around the world.
