St Peter and Paul Cathedral in St Petersburg
The city marks its 300th anniversary this summer
The BBC is marking the 300th anniversary of the Russian city of St Petersburg with a range of programmes on TV and radio celebrating Russia's art and history.

The programming - on BBC Two, BBC Four and BBC Radio 3 - will feature profiles of the city, Russian music and imagery alongside special events.

One of the highlights is a gala concert from the city's famous Mariinsky Theatre hosted by President Putin, with opera stars Placido Domingo and Renée Fleming.

The concert, to be shown on BBC Two on 31 May, will be broadcast around the world.

Another show is a dramatisation of the life of Peter The Great, the Russian count who founded the city, called Peter in Paradise.

The drama will be shown on 6 June on BBC Two, looking at the count's reputation as a tyrant and bully as well as his legacy of creating Russia's second city.

Russian journey

The Russian leader moved his court from Moscow in the 18th Century to the new city, a planned settlement similar to Paris.

Peter The Great will be played by Rory McCann and the drama will be seen through the eyes of his friend Menshikov and Domenico Trezzini, the Swiss architect who designed the St Petersburg.
