Madonna sings for late mother
Madonna also sings about her love for husband Guy Ritichie
Madonna has penned a song about the heartbreak of her mother's death from cancer when she was just five years old for her new album American Life.

The track, Mother and Father, deals with the trauma she felt as a young child growing up with just a father.

The singer has already written music that deals with her relationship with her father. On the 1990 album Like a Prayer the song Oh Father revealed she grew up feeling "unloved".

Mother and Father is written from a child's perspective and reflects on life growing up without a mother.

Lyrics include: "No-one else I guess could hurt me like you did, I didn't understand, I was just a kid.

I feel like I have just woken up out of a dream
"My mother died when I was five, And all I did was sit and cry. I cried and cried and cried all day."

The album is due to be released on 21 April and has been kept under tight security to prevent tracks being leaked on to the internet.

The title track has already run into problems after a promotional video had to be withdrawn because it was deemed "inappropriate" at a time of war.

In the film accompanying the single American Life, in which she is dressed in combat gear, a grenade is thrown towards a President Bush lookalike.

It had been due to be shown on TV channels but Madonna has now dropped it "out of respect for the armed forces".

She was also forced to issue a statement denying she was anti-Bush after commentators saw the video as critical of the US administration.

American Life features 11 songs on which she has collaborated with French producer Mirwais, who she previously worked with on the Music album.

Several of the songs deal with her love for husband Guy Ritchie.

Madonna said: "All of these songs reflect my current state of mind. I feel like I have just woken up out of a dream.

"They range from dismay and anger to joy and certainty. Hopefully I have taken the personal and made it universal."
