A finalist on American Idol has been kicked off the talent show after an outstanding criminal charge came to light.

Corey Clark was given his marching orders after failing to reveal that he was awaiting trial for a misdemeanour charge of assault against his sister.

He is the third person to be expelled from the Fox programme because of a chequered past, following the ejection of a singer who it was discovered had posed topless for a website.

The network said its own background checks did not reveal the charge against Clark because of a spelling mistake in police records.

"Due to his failure to disclose, compounded by an error in a police report which misspelled Corey's name, the incident was not discovered during a background check," Fox said.

"The producers and network feel that Corey's behaviour warrants his disqualification."

Obscure documents

The charge against 22-year-old Clark from Kansas stems from an incident last October, before he was picked as a semi-finalist for the second series of American Idol.

His impending trial for battery and resisting arrest was unveiled by the website The Smoking Gun, which is known for revealing obscure legal documents relating to celebrities.

Frenchie Davis, 23, was removed from the show in February after topless pictures came to light on a pornographic site.

Semi-finalist Jaered Andrews was expelled after failing to disclose he had been arrested in connection with a fight that ended with a man's death.

Finalist Josh Gracin is on standby to fight in the Iraq war as he is a serving Marine lance corporal.

The Marine Corps has denied he is getting preferential treatment because is on the show and said if his section was deployed to the Gulf he would join them.
