Presley regrets Jackson marriage

Lisa Marie Presley has said she is "not proud" of her brief marriage to pop superstar Michael Jackson in the mid-1990s.

The daughter of music legend Elvis Presley was married to Jackson for 19 months from May 1994.

She told Rolling Stone magazine that his mysterious lifestyle attracted her to him, and that she wanted to protect him from allegations of child abuse.

"I can't say what his intentions were, but I can tell you mine was that I absolutely fell in love with him and fell into this whole thing which I'm not proud of now," Presley, who was promoting her solo album, said.

The couple stuck together in public - she kissed him on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1994 and the following year they were interviewed together by US TV journalist Diane Sawyer.

But she says her ex-husband would disappear for weeks on end, and upset her by claiming in an interview that her father had cosmetic surgery on his nose.

'Really ugly'

By the time of the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, the hostility between them was plain to see, as she was left glaring at Jackson from the audience as he performed a medley of hits.

"It just got really ugly at the end," she said.

She demanded a divorce, but he refused to speak to her.

Presley says the experience sent her into a mental and physical breakdown, which she took to writing songs to overcome.

But she added: "I'm not into Michael-bashing at all. I know people want to know what that was about, and I'm trying to say it without making him a bad guy.

"It's hard to do, because it was such a bad situation."

Presley married actor Nicolas Cage in August 2002, but they split up after 107 days together.
