A US judge has issued a warrant for singer Bobby Brown, saying his appearance at an awards ceremony breached his bail conditions.

Judge Wayne M Purdom issued the warrant after Brown appeared at the American Music Awards on Monday.

Brown is not supposed to leave the state of Georgia under bail conditions, set last November after he appeared in court to face charges dating from 1996.

He also had to report to police once a week, which he had been doing until Monday.

He may now face fines or even a jail sentence.

Mr Brown originally underwent trial for misdemeanour charges in DeKalb county in Georgia in 1996, including drink driving.

He appeared at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, singing on stage with rapper Ja Rule.

"As far as the court is concerned, he is now a fugitive," Judge Purdom's secretary said. "We understand from his attorney that (Brown) is going to surrender himself."

Driving charges

In 1996 he failed to appear in court after being charged with drink driving, failure to show proof of insurance, speeding and failing to stay in a lane while driving.

Mr Brown was also told to remain in Georgia and to report to the county's authorities each week until the trial.

Mr Brown's six-year-old charges emerged on 11 November last year when he was arrested in the Buckhead area of Atlanta and charged with possessing marijuana, speeding and having no driver's licence or proof of insurance.

Mr Brown was supposed to face trial next week, but the trial has been now been postponed.

The singer, who is married to pop singer Whitney Houston, was one of the biggest music stars in the US during the 1980s and early 1990s.

He also enjoyed international fame with hits like My Prerogative, On Our Own and Two Can Play That Game.

Before his solo career, he had been in the R&B group New Edition, who scored a number one single, Candy Girl, when he was just 14.
