Blue fever hits New York

It started life in a subsided theatre, now The Blue Room has hit Broadway

The BBC's Rosie Millard reports from New York
Nicole Kidman's play The Blue Room has transferred to New York - where the show that started life in a tiny London theatre is causing a sensation.

Directors Spike Lee and Joel Schumacher and actresses Teri Hatcher and Rosie O'Donnell were among celebrities who attended Sunday night's gala premiere at Broadway's Cort theatre.

The 1,000-seater venue has taken £2.5m in advance bookings for the show's 111 performances, and touts were demanding £220 for a ticket.

The play, which stars only Kidman and Scottish actor Iain Glen, first ran at the Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden in September.

There was a huge scramble for tickets - fuelled by the fact that both actors strip off during the show.

Some New York theatregoers took binoculars to get a good view, but many got more than they bargained for, with one complaining to the New York Daily News he should have been warned that Iain Glen cartwheels nude across the stage.

Ms Kidman admitted she was nervous about the premiere. "I think there is more pressure here, there's a lot more work.

"I think when we start the run and there's no more opening night and previews, then both Iain and I will have more fun with it," she told the BBC.

Her husband Tom Cruise said he fancied following in her footsteps - and had been impressed by the standard of London theatre.

"I think they really have their finger on the pulse of theatre. It's a wider range of theatre, and I admired their drive and zest," he said.
