Hasselhoff: I hit rock bottom
David Hasselhoff
Hasselhoff's drinking problem landed him in hospital
Baywatch star David Hasselhoff has revealed how he hit "rock bottom" before coming to terms with his addiction to alcohol.

In an interview with the American magazine TV Guide, the 50-year-old actor and singer admitted that he had been "spinning out of control".

"Some people can have a few drinks and others cannot," he said.

Hasselhoff checked into California's Betty Ford clinic in June to treat the problem but left the centre after just one day.

He found a hotel, had too much to drink and was subsequently rushed unconscious to a local hospital the following morning.

"When I went to Betty Ford I wasn't really ready," he said. I said to myself, 'This is sad here' let's go out and have one more night of fun'."

"And then morning, that was it. I've got to end up in the hospital before I realised I couldn't handle it. And I woke up going, 'This is rock bottom'."

The actor checked himself back into the clinic, and a statement was released by his publicist two weeks later, admitting Hasselhoff was seeking help for a drink problem.

"I went to Betty Ford full well knowing it was going to come out," he said.

"In a way I wanted to say, would you rather have a couple of days of bad press or be in the newspapers saying you were driving under the influence or you killed somebody?"

Hasselhoff, who is currently filming the Baywatch reunion movie Baywatch Hawaiian Wedding, has been attending daily meetings with other recovering alcoholics since leaving the clinic.

"When you have a problem you have got to take care of it," he said.

Best known for his parts in beach series Baywatch and futuristic police drama Knight Rider, Hasselhoff first made his name in the long-running TV drama The Young And The Restless.

He has also enjoyed success as a singer, particularly in Germany, where he sang on top of the Berlin Wall on New Year's Eve 1989, just weeks after the collapse of communist East Germany.

Hasselhoff recently made a cameo appearance as himself in teen comedy The New Guy.
