Barbra Streisand marries out of the limelight

Barbra Streisand's Malibu estate where the nuptials took place

Barbra Streisand has married actor James Brolin on Wednesday in a lavish, high-security affair at her estate in Malibu, California.

Among the 80 guests were John Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, actor Tom Hanks, director Sidney Pollack and fashion designer Donna Karan, who created Ms Streisand's dress.

In Hollywood, extravagant affairs are the norm. But this star-studded occasion may have outdone other glittering weddings in at least one way: its efforts to keep out the Hollywood media.

One Hollywood report said that guests were invited by telephone and had to sign confidentiality agreements before attending. On the day, any chance of either seeing or hearing the proceedings also was blocked.

It was a game of psychological warfare. For more than four hours, a large black van parked at the estate's entrance which blared White Zombie's heavy metal hit, 1965, over and over again.

The private affair

The wedding, said to have taken place exactly two years since Mr Brolin and Ms Streisand went on their first date together, was conducted by a rabbi in the living room of Ms Streisand's home.

After the ceremony, guests were regaled with a grand buffet dinner in a large white marquee, by the swimming pool, surrounded by fresh orchids.

Ms Streisand, 56, is often classed among Hollywood's royalty. She began her career on Broadway in the early 1960s. She has acted in a number of films, including Hello Dolly, Funny Girl, for which she won an Academy Award, Yentl and The Prince of Tides.

She has also sold millions of albums as a recording artist. In 1987, she won a Grammy as best female pop vocalist.

Mr Brolin, 57, appears as Lt. Col. Bill Kelly on the TV series Pensacola: Wings of Gold. He has also starred in Capricorn One, Westworld and The Amityville Horror and the TV series' Hotel and Marcus Welby, MD

Ms Streisand is divorced from actor Elliot Gould. Mr Brolin has been married twice before.
