Hannibal chomps Chocolat

The Oscar-nominated film Chocolat has failed to shift Hannibal from the top of the UK box office charts.

The serial killer movie held off competition from the Juliette Binoche movie, as well as Keanu Reeves' film The Gift and the Meg Ryan and the Russell Crowe-vehicle, Proof of Life.

UK box office
1. Hannibal
2. Chocolat
3. The Emperor's New Groove
4. The Gift
5. What Women Want
6. Proof of Life
7. The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle
8. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
9. Traffic
10. Dude, Where's My Car?
Ridley Scott's sequel to Silence of the Lams has now grossed more than 17m in three weeks in the UK.

Chocolat took 929,000 in its first three days of release, less than half of that taken by Hannibal in the same period.

Based on a novel by Joanne Harris, Chocolat has been nominated for a best film Oscar, while stars Juliette Binoche and Dame Jude Dench are up for best actress and best supporting actress respectively.

Supernatural thriller The Gift took 900,000 in its first three days, while Proof of Life took 762,000.

Taylor Hackford, the director of Proof of Life, recently blamed the real life romance of Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan on the film's poor performance at the US box office.

Robert Redford's latest film, The Legend of Bagger Vance, failed to break into the top 10, despite the appearance of stars Matt Damon, Will Smith and Charlize Theron.

The film reached 13th in the chart, taking just 149,000 and mirroring its poor performance in the US.
