Setback for new town sports arena

The stadium was planned to be open by 2009
Plans for a redeveloped sports stadium in Swindon have suffered a setback after council planners recommended they be refused.

The Abbey Stadium in Blunsdon would be the home of Swindon Speedway, which was facing a move out of the town.

Planners are concerned that nearby land is set aside for a business park, and that the application wants to turn much of the area into unnecessary housing.

Councillors will make a decision on 11 September.

Planners also raised concerns that the land set aside for the redeveloped stadium is smaller than the current arena.
