Deputy mayor 'sorry' over remarks
Swindon's Deputy Mayor has resigned from a council committee after being accused of making offensive remarks during a meeting.

Councillor Owen Lister, a retired doctor, is the Conservative councillor for the Abbey Meads area.

Mr Lister is accused of making remarks of a disparaging nature about children with special needs during a Children's Overview Task Group.

He said the remarks were made in a "jocular fashion" and apologised.

Mr Lister has since resigned from the task group and has written an apology to Swindon Borough Council's solicitor.

The council told the BBC: "Due to the gravity of the situation the matter has now been referred to the standards committee which will meet next Monday."

Mr Lister has also written a statement to help the council with its investigations.
