Campaign to save historic brewery

There has been a brewery on site in Leeds since 1822

A campaign is being started against plans to stop brewing Tetley's ale in West Yorkshire.

Tetley's has been brewed in Leeds since 1822 but parent company Carlsberg is closing the Hunslet Road site in 2011.

Production is set to be moved to Carlsberg's other site in Northampton, but the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) said Tetley's should stay in Leeds.

Carlsberg said Tetley's would continue to brewed in Yorkshire "if a suitable partner can be found".

Camra members held a meeting in Leeds on Thursday to mark the start of their Save Tetley's campaign.

Petition hope

Spokesman Barrie Pepper told BBC News: "We want it to be brewed in Leeds and particularly we want it to be brewed at Tetley's and if that's not possible we want it to certainly stay here.

"It's been proved before that you can't take a beer out of its location. So many times before other breweries have tried this [and failed].

"Camra's done wonderful things over the last 30-odd years. We'll do what we can and we'll certainly tell [Carlsberg] what we think."

Mr Pepper said Camra had started a petition against the closure which it would present to Carlsberg, and he hoped thousands of Leeds people would sign it.

Carlsberg blamed falling consumption and higher duties when it announced its decision to close the site last November.

A Carlsberg spokesman said: "Tetley's is very important to us and will continue to play a major part in our future. We will ensure that Tetley's great taste and quality remain the same. It will continue to be brewed with the same care and passion that it always has been.

"Our decision to announce the closure of Leeds at the earliest opportunity has meant that Carlsberg can plan and commit to continue to brew Tetley's in the UK, ideally in the North and if a suitable partner can be found in Yorkshire then this would be our clear preference."
