Police have appealed to the community in Leeds where a man was shot dead in a targeted attack to help them catch the gang of armed killers.

The attack happened at the Shahjahan Restaurant in Roundhay Road, Harehills, at about 2330 BST on Friday.

Det Supt Stephen Payne, of West Yorkshire Police, said it appeared the gang had been lying in wait for the 34-year-old when he left the takeaway.

He fled back inside the premises, but the men followed him in.

"We know that three or four masked gunmen were involved in the incident," Mr Payne said.

"As the victim was coming out of the take-away, two of these chased him back in and pursued him into the kitchen area.

"The owner and kitchen staff sought refuge in a secure storeroom whilst the gunman fired a number of shots directly at the victim and then made off on foot."

Mr Payne said the gang were all male and dressed in dark sports clothing with hoods. Their faces were concealed by balaclavas.

He said he could not confirm the motive for the shooting, but the victim's background was being investigated and he believed it was a targeted attack.

"This is a very busy route where there are lots of restaurants, take-aways and bars," Mr Payne said.

"I would appeal to everyone who was in that area - including taxi drivers - that if they have seen anything at all to get in touch."

He said officers would be continuing door-to-door inquiries to appeal for information.

The takeaway was still cordoned off on Sunday morning, along with two cars parked near the outlet.
