Smokers offered free health check
X-ray of lungs
COPD is the name for a collection of lung diseases
Smokers in Bradford are being urged to take advantage of a free health check to make sure they are not suffering from lung disease.

Doctors in the city fear many people may have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) without realising.

COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is usually caused by smoking and causes breathing problems.

Anyone interested in finding out more can have their lungs checked in Centenary Square on Wednesday.

Early diagnosis

A respiratory nurse, COPD patients and a consultant from Bradford Teaching Hospitals Trust will also be available to answer questions.

COPD kills about 30,000 people every year in the UK.

The British Lung Foundation said the event would help raise awareness of the problem.

Spokeswoman Bev Wears said: "It is estimated that 2.5m people in the UK have COPD but do not realise it, they may just think they are unfit or have a smoker's cough.

"By diagnosing COPD early, we can slow the progression of the condition and keep people much fitter for much longer."
