Leeds United football club has suspended player Jody Morris while it conducts an internal investigation, it said on Thursday.
The Leeds player and another man not connected with the Elland Road club were questioned by officers about allegations of a serious sexual assault on Monday night, but were later released.
Mr Morris, a former Chelsea player who joined Leeds in the summer, was arrested at the club's training ground at Thorp Arch, near Wetherby, on Tuesday.
In a statement Leeds United said it had "had a meeting with Jody Morris and his solicitor this morning.
"In accordance with the standard provisions of the player's contract of employment, he has been suspended for up to 14 days to enable the club to conduct an internal investigation."
Officers investigating the case are understood to have spoken to a second man at Wetherby police station, but he has not been arrested.
