Celebrations will mark the mall's first anniversary
Birmingham's Bullring shopping complex has been visited by 6.5 million more people than expected in its first year.

The operators of the 530m centre said it had attracted 36.5 million shoppers since it opened last September, beating estimates of 30m.

One of the centre's flagship stores is Selfridges, which is covered in 15,000 aluminium discs.

The centre's general manager Tim Walley, said: "The past 12 months have exceeded all of our expectations."

Weekend of celebrations

Even in the first 10 hours of opening, about 276,000 people shopped at the Bullring, which has more than 140 shops and kiosks.

Mr Walley said: "We have gone from 13 to three in the official retail rankings and received national, even international acclaim, for our shopping offering."

The first anniversary of the mall's opening will be marked with a weekend of celebrations.

Mr Walley added: "There is a lot for the city to celebrate today and into the weekend.

"We have a fantastic line-up of events planned and we are looking forward to a real party atmosphere over the next few days."
