A 20-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Birmingham father who died when he tried to stop thieves stealing his van.

Matthew Fitzgerald was remanded in custody by magistrates in Solihull, West Midlands, on Tuesday accused of killing David Warrilow after the court rejected an application for bail.

Mr Warrilow, 37, suffered serious head injuries when he was run over as he tried to stop thieves stealing his blue Ford Transit van from outside GB Singh's newsagents in Willow Way, Chelmsley Wood.

The incident happened on 13 January this year and the van was later found abandoned in nearby Winchester Avenue.

Mr Warrilow had been married to his wife Tracey for two years, although they had lived together for 18 years and had two children, Fay, 14, and Chad, 12.

Mr Fitzgerald, of Thistledown Road, Shard End, Birmingham, was ordered to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.

A second man, 19-year-old Christopher Clarke, of Hobmoor Road, Small Heath, Birmingham, was also remanded in custody when he appeared before magistrates charged with the same offence last Thursday.
