Plans to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro are considered

The Tyne and Wear Metro network could be extended to Washington for the first time under plans being unveiled.

Proposals by operator Nexus, which could cost about £150m, include the possible reinstatement of a rail line between Washington and Gateshead.

Metro services to Sunderland were introduced eight years ago.

Councillors on the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) will consider a report on the plan from Metro director general Bernard Garner.
