The Tyne and Wear Metro network could be extended to Washington for the first time under plans being unveiled. Proposals by operator Nexus, which could cost about £150m, include the possible reinstatement of a rail line between Washington and Gateshead. Metro services to Sunderland were introduced eight years ago. Councillors on the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) will consider a report on the plan from Metro director general Bernard Garner.
