A six-year-old girl snatched from her bathroom was repeatedly sexually assaulted before being dumped naked and screaming, police have revealed.

The child was taken from the bath at her home in Willington Quay, North Tyneside on the evening of 27 December.

Specially trained officers have spent several days talking to the girl, who has given more details of her ordeal.

She told police she was sexually assaulted several times in a car before being dumped in a lane.

Det Ch Insp Jim Napier, who is leading the investigation, said: "As a result of interviews with specially trained officers, more details have emerged of the little girl's ordeal.

This is a potentially dangerous man who may have deliberately set out to abuse a child
Det Ch Insp Jim Napier, Northumberland Police

"From the outset of the investigation we had medical and other evidence to support the little girl's account of what happened that night.

"This has been strengthened by further interviews in which the girl has been very brave in trying to help us build up a more complete picture of what happened.

"We are now able to say that after being taken from the bathroom of her home, she was driven around in a car and repeatedly sexually assaulted before being abandoned in the back lane.

"This reinforces my view that this is a potentially dangerous man who may have deliberately set out to abuse a child."

Officers say they are following up a number of leads after an appeal was made concerning a number of vehicles seen in the area at the time of the abduction.

The cars police are looking for are a red or burgundy Volkswagen, a red BMW and a black Ford Focus.
