Detectives investigating an attack on an 11-month-old baby which was punched in the face have released a photofit of her suspected attacker.

Yasmin Ali was walking with her baby, Sarah, in a pushchair on Borough Road, Middlesbrough, on Wednesday night.

They were approached by a youth, who appeared to be drunk or under the influence of drugs, who tried to snatch the baby and then hit her in the face.

Police said they have received a number of calls following an appeal.

The baby suffered redness to one of her eyes and was taken to hospital for checks.

The youth is described as white, 14-16, 5ft 7in to 5ft 8in, of scruffy appearance.

He was wearing a light grey tracksuit with three white stripes on the arms and legs and scruffy trainers.

Det Con Sonja Whittingham, from Cleveland Police, said: "For some unknown reason he decided he wanted the baby and said it was his baby.

"Luckily the baby only had slight injuries and appears to be okay.

"However the consequences of this attack could have been much more serious."

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.
