Chinese lantern 'sparks sea search' in Sussex

A Chinese lantern is thought to have sparked a false alarm and coastal search in Sussex.

Crews from Bexhill were called out to search for a vessel in distress after reports that a red distress flare had been fired at sea.

The alarm was raised at 1730 GMT on Wednesday.

The Sussex Coastguard said due to fog crews were unable to locate anyone in distress and believed a Chinese lantern was mistaken for the distress flare.
