Swan recovering after ice rescue

Fire crews helped to rescue the swan
The swan was rescued by crews using specialist inflatable walkways

A swan is recovering and will be returning to her lake in Sussex after being rescued from ice at the weekend.

The bird was rescued by fire crews and the RSPCA from the lake at Drove Park, Newhaven, on Saturday after her legs became trapped in frozen water.

Lewes Council said the swan was taken to a nearby vet and it was hoped she would "return very soon".

Councillor James MacCleary said the lake has been home to a pair of swans for the past three years.

The male swan was not injured and remained at the council-owned nature reserve.

He said the fire service attended because of the dangers of the ice, and rescue teams had to use specialist inflatable walkways to reach the bird.

The work to free the swan and rescue her took about an hour.
