Tory control for Surrey councils

The Conservative Party has taken the lead in Surrey

The Conservative Party has held control on five councils in Surrey and won another in the local elections.

Mole Valley, Runnymede, Tandridge, Woking and Reigate and Banstead retained Conservative control in Thursday's vote.

The party won Elmbridge, which was previously a hung council, for the first time since 1990.

The Liberal Democrats lost one seat and representatives of a residents' association lost three.

Runnymede Borough Council retained 36 Conservative councillors, and has six independent residents' association representatives.

There are now 32 Conservatives, 21 representatives of a residents' association and seven Liberal Democrats in Elmbridge Borough Council.

No changes

Previously there were 28 Conservatives and eight Liberal Democrats on the council.

In Woking and Mole Valley, there were no changes to the proportion of party members on the council, although the two main parties swapped some seats.

There are still 19 Conservative members and 17 Liberal Democrats in Woking and 22 Conservatives, 16 Liberal Democrats and 3 independents in Mole Valley.

The Liberal Democrats lost one seat to the Conservatives in Tandridge, as did an independent member.

There are now 33 Tories, eight Liberal Democrats and one independent on the council.

In Reigate and Banstead, the Tories lost two seats on the council from 41 to 39 at the expense of one Liberal Democrat and one independent seat.
