Comic Lee Mack to help baby's cancer fight

Ruby Owen's family want to take her to the US for proton therapy

The stand-up comic Lee Mack has agreed to donate his takings from a show in Stoke-on-Trent to help a girl with cancer get treatment in the US.

Ruby Owen, from Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in May 2009.

She has already had brain surgery and eight courses of chemotherapy.

Her father Martin Owen believes proton therapy available in America could save her life and is trying to raise £250,000 to pay for it.

'So grateful'

Proton therapy specifically targets tumours and minimises damage to healthy tissue but is not available for brain cancer patients in the UK.

Lee Mack said: "I was driving back from a show last week listening to Radio 5 live when I heard Ruby's dad.

"I think anyone who's heard Martin's story can't help being moved, especially as I'm a dad myself.

"Then I remembered we were taking the show to Stoke-on-Trent and it all sort of fitted in."

Mr Owen said: "Words can't explain what a generous act it is. We've raised almost £61,000 so far through Caudwell Children's charity.

"One guy who heard me on the radio last week donated £10,000 after the show and now with Lee's money, that's another £10,000. We are just so grateful.

"I don't have a choice, I have to hold out hope that we will get all the money because this treatment could save my daughter."

Lee Mack is performing in Stoke-on-Trent on Friday evening.
