Crystal Palace avoided relegation to League One

Eight football fans arrested after trouble flared at Hillsborough following Sheffield Wednesday's relegation have been released on bail.

The arrests were made outside the ground for public order and assault after the club's match with Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

Property and police vehicles were damaged, a police spokesman said.

Wednesday would have ensured their Championship survival and sent Palace down with a win, but drew the game 2-2.

Pitch invasion

"Essentially, Sheffield Wednesday supporters were involved in disorder outside the ground just after the game," the South Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

"Eight arrests were made for public order and assault and officers are reviewing footage from the police helicopter with the view to perhaps making more arrests."

Police separated some rival fans who invaded the pitch after the final whistle.

Several isolated violent exchanges were snuffed out, while Palace defender Clint Hill required the protection of stewards as he raced to the players' tunnel.

Both Palace manager Paul Hart and Owls counterpart Alan Irvine said afterwards that they were unaware of the ugly scenes that unfolded.

Wednesday chairman Lee Strafford refused to comment.
